Young Learner’s Programme (YLP)
Is a unique reading programme designed for learners aged between 4 – 8 years. Children experience the joy and excitement of learning, in a gentle, non-pressurised atmosphere.
YLP shows young learners how to:-
- focus their attention
- improve their hand/eye co-ordination
- become skilled at learning the alphabet
- understand basic punctuation
- build on and reinforce basic reading and pre-reading skills
- enhance comprehension and sight word recognition skills
- significantly reduce the possibility of a learning problem developing
- develop ‘learning skills’ which can be used throughout life
A Young Learner’s Programme is the choice of many parents for their child/children, especially if there is a history of dyslexia in the family. It also provides reassurance for those parents who may be concerned that the strategies used in the early school years are not always tailored to the educational needs of their child.
What’s involved in a 30-hour Young Learner’s Programme?
- Davis® Focusing Skills provide students with the ability to be focussed on the learning task at hand.
- Davis® Co-ordination Skills drastically improve co-ordination/motor control skills, such as handwriting, catching, throwing balls, balance, juggling and spatial awareness.
- Davis® Symbol Mastery allows students to master the alphabet, punctuation marks and basic sight words with a simple, easy and fun multi-sensory alternative to pencil-paper activities and drill exercises.
- Davis® Reading Exercises improve skills in word recognition and comprehension, which can be used alone or to complement other reading programmes.
- Training of a Support Person in the region of 15 hours training on how to use the Davis® Tools.
- Young Learner’s Kit which provides all the equipment that is needed to follow up the programme.
A Young Learner’s Programme is very similar in content to an Adult Dyslexia Correction Programme, but has been adapted to meet the needs and understanding of the younger learner.
It offers a unique partnership between young learner, facilitator, parent or another family member, enabling them to offer the ongoing support required, in order to hone the new skills and techniques that the child has mastered.
