About
My name is Jacqui and I would like to tell you how ‘A New Way’ came about.
Having worked in industry for many years, I was able to change careers and eventually train for a job that I really love, that of a Basic Skills/Essential Skills Tutor, Specialist Dyslexia teacher and eventually as a E-learning Tutor.
My work takes me into many workplace settings, whether it is a hotel, restaurant, factory, care home, sports centre, shop or police training establishment and is carried out on a one-to-one basis, which allows me to quickly build a rapport with those needing my help.
Although those I work with are bright, intelligent and highly talented individuals who are very good at their chosen professions, they lack self-confidence in their abilities, mostly because they may struggle with their reading, writing, maths or organisational abilities.
It is obvious that many of them are dyslexic, or display some dyslexic tendencies, but have never been diagnosed, or if they were, have received little or no help whilst at school, college or work.
There are of course those who may be a bit older, but still do not know they may be dyslexic, thinking that reading, spelling or writing are things they never have been very good at. These are the ones that I call the ‘lost generation’, born in a time when little was known about dyslexia and its related conditions. They may have spent most of their lives being misunderstood, made to feel that they are in same way ‘broken’, second best or just plain stupid.
I was overjoyed when I gained my specialist dyslexia teaching qualification, but soon became increasingly frustrated when using the conventional techniques that I had been taught only seemed to help a few of my students. I knew somewhere there must be a better way – a new way – to help all of them. Quite by accident I got the chance to attend a talk that a man called Ron Davis was giving at Reading University. I listened to what he had to say and I knew that I had found that better way. Ron described the techniques that he developed in 1982 to overcome his own learning disabilities. That day changed my life and I knew that I had found that better way ‘a new way’, which is why I have called my dyslexia consultancy – ‘A New Way’.
I trained in the Davis® methods and after over 400 hours of training, writing essays, producing case studies, being observed, working as a facilitator, client and observer, I became a Licensed Davis Dyslexia Facilitator, which means I can offer Davis® Dyslexia Correction Programmes to people of all ages.
‘A New Way’ is a joint effort between me and my husband Barry; he not only has over 40 years worth of experience of working in industry, but also as a Union Learning Representative, helping other people and advising employers and employees alike.
So please don’t let everyday be a struggle, come and find out how ‘A New Way’ can help you or your child.
