Teachers need training to help spot the signs of dyslexia

Annabel Heseltine’s article in’ The Telegraph’, looks at why girls with dyslexia might not have their condition spotted at school because their diligence masks its effect on their work.

I have worked with people of all ages, some mature students and some who have only recently left school who are so obviously dyslexic, but have never been identified at school and subsequently have never received any help.

More certainly needs to be done to train teachers to spot the signs and put adequate provision started for these children. The BDA has set up an e-petition to make this kind of training mandatory in Initial Teaching Training.

If they get enough signatures, then the topic will have to be debated in parliament.
